The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched an invitation to bid for a tender to rehabilitate the Karantina Solid Waste Management Facility which was damaged by the Port Explosion.
“The rehabilitation works consist of construction and equipping works needed to bring the Karantina facility back to its normal operation (whether at partial or full processing capacity depending on the budget allocated for the current rehabilitation phase),” the UNDP said.
The amount allocated for this project is around $5 million. Nasser Yassin, Minister of Environment, said that the World Bank has provided a grant for the project through a trust fund and that it will be implemented under the supervision of the UNDP in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Municipality of Beirut and other concerned entities. He said that the project also involves providing technical assistance to improve the operation of the facility and will contribute to enhancing sorting of solid waste at source.
The multi-donor trust fund Lebanon Financing Facility (LFF) was established in 2020 following the Port blast. The rehabilitation project will be executed under the Beirut Critical Environment Recovery, Restoration, and Waste Management Program which is a World Bank-UNDP joint program financed by the trust fund.
