€30 million from EU
to rehab 11 wastewater plants

Project implemented by UNICEF

will benefit over one million residents

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Ministry of Environment, will rehabilitate 11 wastewater treatment plants. The project will be implemented by UNICEF and funded by the EU with a total budget of €30 million.

The project will benefit over one million residents, according to UNICEF. The wastewater treatment plants to be rehabilitated are located in Shabriha, Sharqiyeh, Chekka, Selaata, Tripoli, Ghadir, Iaat, Joub Jannine, Yohmor, Zawtar, and Kfarsir.

“We will ensure the continuity of this project through a cost recovery system, such as relying on solar energy,” said Nasser Yassine, Minister of Environment.

Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayad said the ministry is working towards accomplishing the recovery of the water sector by 2026.

The majority of existing wastewater treatment plants has stopped functioning during past years. This has affected the quality of groundwater, lakes, rivers, and the sea. It has also increased the risk of waterborne diseases, such as cholera.
