Qalamoun fish market
rebuilt by UNDP and KfW

To support 150 households

dependent on the fishery sector

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Germany’s KfW Development Bank (KfW) have rebuilt a fish market in Al-Qalamoun (Tripoli) to support fishermen.

The market will serve 150 families dependent on the fishery sector by increasing their revenue, creating additional jobs, and enhancing food security.

A budget of around $250,000 was allocated for the project which was funded by KfW. The project involved the construction of a new building to replace the old hangar and included an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conducted during the design phase, capacity building for the management board, and the promotion of better hygiene practices among the fishermen.

The project took 14 months to be completed. The new market was built in a plot of land owned by the Lebanese Government, where the old market was located.

UNDP has executed this project in collaboration with the Cooperative of Fisheries in Qalamoun, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and Qalamoun Municipality.

UNDP has implemented projects in other coastal cities that include Al Mina (Tripoli), Okaibe (Kesserouan), Dbayeh, Dora, Jiyeh, and Saida.

The fishery sector supports more than 4,000 families across coastal cities. It is expected to generate revenues estimated at $377 million in 2023 achieving an annual growth of 8.5 percent, according to the World Bank.
