The number of individuals in need of Gender Based Violence (GBV) protection services increased almost six times in 2022 compared to 2021, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affair (UNOCHA).

GBV threatens 393,000 individuals, including 297,000 local citizens, 46,000 migrants, and 50,000 Palestinian refugees. This number was limited to 67,000 individuals in 2021.

Females represent 90 percent of people in need of GBV protection. Children account for 33 percent of GBV-exposed individuals, adults’ share is 54 percent, and that older people is 13 percent.

This deterioration is caused by poverty, political and social instability, the economic crisis, collapse of basic services, and family tensions.

Safety and security concerns for women are common among local households, of whom 25 percent reported having fears in their community, including being exposed to sexual violence and harassment, kidnapping, and sexual exploitation. The challenges are even greater among Palestinian refugees, of whom 30 percent reported having safety and security concerns for women in their community.

GBV risks are worsened by disruptions in assistance, particularly in specialized GBV services such as case management, psychological support, legal counseling, safe shelter options, and cash assistance for protection.
